North Devon Novelists is a prospective group of creative writers whose main focus is on long fiction. The plan is to meet once a month in a venue in Barnstaple; to share new and edited work with the group for both positive and constructive negative feedback; to stimulate new creative work from each other; to benefit from the experience of occasional speakers in the industry; and to promote each other’s work. The focus will be working towards publication. The group will have a page on the North Devon Publishing Project hub, with opportunities for writers to promote their own web presence, published books, teaching work or related interests. The group will be led initially by Rebecca Alexander, a published writer, whose first novel will be published by Del Rey UK, an imprint of Ebury/Random House in October 2013. Rebecca has an MA in creative writing from the University of Winchester and an advanced diploma in creative writing from the Open University. If you are interested in joining, please send a 3000 word minimum writing sample and a brief description of a novel you are presently writing/hope to work on, as well as a little about yourself, to email@example.com
North Devon Songwriters: After many years of running music clubs and open mics, it is apparent to me (Russell Bave) that there are a lot of musicians writing songs in the privacy of their homes. Some will come along and play to audiences at local open mic’s, while others just do it for their own pleasure. The purpose of North Devon Songwriters is to create a friendly forum to discuss and comment on songs with a view to developing them. Meeting on a regular basis it will initially be held at members homes, and allow for the discussion of songs-in-progress and the option to critique work. If should be possible to record individuals songs so that we can be sent to other songwriter groups for feedback. It is hoped that similar groups will start up on the Isle of Wight and also in Penzance via musician friends, who are equally committed to writing original songs. Storyslingers: Has grown into one of Dorset’s most happening writers groups. We get together on the first and third Tuesday of each month, at Shaftesbury Arts Centre. Meetings consist of discussions about various writing topics, news and updates on writing events, reading our stories with optional critique, free writing and mini workshops. We’ve established a vibrant programme of events; including Dorset’s first ever story slam, a fictional map making competition, prose poetry & music nights, and we’ve taken many trips together to literary events outside our locale. http://storyslingers.blogspot.co.uk/ Storyslingers have a current competition: check out the blog for more information.
